Return to ADDvisor Volume 1 1999 Index Number 5, October 15, 1999 ==================================================== In this issue: 1. Hallowell, "The Human Moment" 2. Potential New Medications for ADHD ================================================ HALLOWELL "THE HUMAN MOMENT" ================================================ At the CHADD conference in Washington, D.C., last weekend, some of the "greatest hits of ADHD" spoke to the more than 1500 participants at the conference. One of the keynote speakers was Edward Hallowell, MD, whose address was entitled, "The Human Moment". This address was based on his recent book, Connect. Dr. Hallowell told the audience that the degree to which you can connect to others is related to your success in life. He cited many studies that document the relationship between connectedness and mortality. Social isolation is a risk factor for people's health and ADHD kids often find themselves isolated and alienated. Dr. Hallowell implored us to focus on and help to build our own connections and those of our children. He enumerated 12 types of connections that people can make in their life. 1. The family we are born into. 2. Our current family - the one we create 3. Friends and neighbors 4. Work/school/activities 5. The world of beauty, art and poetry 6. History - our connection to the past 7. Nature and its special places 8. Pets and other animals 9. Ideas and information 10. Institutions and organizations 11. The cosmos, spirituality 12. Yourself, feeling comfortably connected to yourself. By exploring our own connections and building up the connections that are weak, we enrich our lives and enrich the lives of those around us. ================================================ POTENTIAL NEW MEDICATIONS FOR ADHD ================================================ On Saturday morning of the CHADD conference, Mark Wolraich, MD presented new medications that are on the horizon for the treatment of ADHD. The first is Concerta, a medication that provides a new way to deliver methylphenidate to the body. Concerta looks like a capsule but it has a special membrane encasing the medication that allows it to uniformly be released into the body. In this way, an individual need only take one dose in the morning and can experience the benefits of the medication for 10-12 hours. There are fewer peaks and valleys as are experienced with the sustained release version of methylphenidate. Alza has submitted its application to the FDA for approval and hope to be able to market the medication in mid-2000. Two other methylphenidate medications are in the pipeline as well. One allows for smaller doses to have greater effects. A second delivers the medication through a dermal patch. These medications are probably two to three years from being marketed. Lastly, a non-stimulant medication called Tomoxetine is being developed. This medication is also two to three years away from market. CONTACT INFORMATION _______________________ Alan R.
