AACAP GUIDELINES FOR USE OF STIMULANT MEDICATION

==========================================

In an article published by The Brown University Child and Adolescent Behavior Letter for March 2002, an overview of the AACAP (American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry) guidelines for the use of stimulant medication was published.

The AACAP guidelines provide a comprehensive overview of the use of stimulants for children, adolescents and adults. It also includes an appropriate plan for physicians prescribing stimulant medication. The plan includes:

1. Documentation of prior treatment

2. Obtaining a baseline blood pressure, pulse, height and weight.

3. Selecting the order of stimulants to be used.

4. Using the recommended starting dose of each stimulant.

5. Deciding on both a minimum and maximum dose.

6. Managing treatment-related side effects.

7. Providing a schedule for monitoring the drug maintenance phase.

The guidelines are published in the February 6th issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association.
